Today I explored Port Vila and what a change from Honiara! The seafront is very touristy – there are cafes, parks and tourist attractions advertised everywhere. I grabbed some cash, got a coffee and hooked onto the Wi-Fi and tried to organise collecting my research permit.
In the Solomon Islands, I have learnt to expect the unexpected. I’ve come to expect to pay a fee here or there for parking your boat or to visit an island. I’ve learnt that when you’ve been told they will pick you up at 9 am, they will be there at 10 am. Well, Zela Adventure did not fail to disappoint on the unexpected.
After arriving and finding out that there were no sim cards, my first task of the day was to purchase and set up a new sim card – allowing me access to home, Solomon contacts and in general making me feel that little bit safer. I was told that getting into town was easy, stick out your arm and a bus will stop.
We drove through the flood behind a 4x4, the flood water was so high that the 4x4’s number plate was almost submerged.
